FAQ - Wallpaper Removal Questions
Can you paint over the wallpaper?
Our answer is yes you can with the right process but we do not recommend it. If there is any trouble with the paper down the road then it becomes a tougher task to get it off due to having to fight through the paint. We prefer to get the paper off and do it the correct way from the start.
How do you get the paper off?
Just as anything else, wallpaper has evolved over time and there are many different styles of paper out there today whether it be older paper still installed from the 50's or 60's or new paper installed last month. They all have unique characteristics and will come off differently. You have to know which method works best for each style of paper. We use a combination of steam, hot water, and commercial grade wallpaper removal chemicals to get the job done.
What is your removal process?
We start by prepping the area, covering the floors, protecting furniture and personal belongings so make sure everything is protected. We then start removing the wallpaper. Once the paper is removed we will sand the walls and prime the walls with an oil based primer to seal the walls. This helps both sealing any residual glue residue as well as giving the new paint something to adhere to. After the walls are sealed we will start any repair work that needs to be done. Depending on how large or how many repairs are needed we will spot prime the repair areas and finally apply two coats of paint.
Why do you need to prime and why is it an oil primer?
The primer gives two benefits prior to painting. First it seals the walls so that any residual glue residue is sealed and cannot cause problems with the new paint. It also seals the walls should there be any damage that needs to be repaired. Most paints today are water based and if any repairs are needed the walls will pull the water and moisture out of the paint causing the repairs to bubble. Water based paint also reactivates any glue residue left behind and painting over that could lead to paint failure. This is why we do a primer coat of an oil based primer. Since the primer is an oil base and not water based there is no water to get pulled out of the primer allowing everything to be sealed properly and allow any repair work to be completed while also giving a nice base coat for new paint to adhere to.
